Spaetzle is a traditional German pasta that’s light, slightly chewy, and wonderfully comforting. Made with just a handful of ingredients, these little dumplings cook quickly and absorb buttery richness, making them a perfect side dish or a hearty base for toppings. Whether pressed through a spaetzle maker or shaped using a simple cutting board method, they come out soft and deliciously rustic.

For the best results, make sure the dough is just sticky enough to hold its shape, and cook the spaetzle until they float—this guarantees the perfect texture. Want to take it up a notch? Toss them in a pan with extra butter and some caramelized onions for a golden, crispy finish! 🍝🧈✨

Method:

  1. Prepare the Dough:
    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
    • Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients and add the eggs and water.
    • Mix until a soft dough forms.
    • The consistency should be slightly sticky but manageable.
  2. Bring Water to a Boil:
    • Heat a large pot of salted water until boiling.
  3. Shape the Spaetzle:
    • Using a Spaetzle Maker: Press the dough through the spaetzle maker directly into the boiling water.
    • Using a Colander: Place a colander over the pot, scoop some dough into it, and press it through the holes with a spatula.
    • Using a Cutting Board: Spread some dough onto a cutting board and use a knife to cut small strips into the boiling water.
  4. Cook the Spaetzle:
    • Once the spaetzle floats to the top (about 2-3 minutes), let it cook for another 1-2 minutes.
    • Use a slotted spoon to transfer the cooked spaetzle to a bowl.
  5. Add Butter & Serve:
    • Mix the cooked spaetzle with butter until well coated.

Enjoy your homemade spaetzle!
